Friends fall in love

Love is in the air at Living Gems Caboolture with homeowners David and Martine Fryer meeting, falling in love and marrying at the resort.

The couple will celebrate their second wedding anniversary on 30 October this year. But it was two moments of tragedy that first brought the couple together.

“My wife Judy passed away a year after we moved into Living Gems Caboolture,” said David. “We’d been married for 56 years, and I was going through an absolute black hole.”

“I was friends with David’s wife when they first moved into the resort as I lived just across the road,” said Martine. “Around that time my then-husband and I split.”

As neighbours, Martine and David were regulars at ten-pin bowling, the Friday happy hour and regular dinners at the Country Club.

“It just seemed natural that after these events I escort Martine home as she is vision-impaired,” said David.

Friendship blossomed into love a little over a year later.

“We were going to wear out the concrete between the two houses and I’m an old-fashioned kind-of-guy and thought if we’re going to live together, we’re going to get married.”

Martine and David had their engagement party, wedding and reception at the Country Club surrounded by friends and family.

“We can’t imagine living anywhere else but Living Gems Caboolture,” said Martine. “It’s a safe place and not just in terms of security. I don’t have to worry about steps, and I can do things without needing David’s assistance all the time.

“I walk to the Country Club on my own during the day to play ten-pin bowling with the girls.”

At the resort, David and Martine enjoy dancing, the entertainment at the Country Club as well as the movies in the resort’s cinema. This month the couple are joining Living Gems friends for a holiday to the town of 1770.
