Everyday ways to get moving

You don’t need a gym membership or a rigid routine to take care of your heart – sometimes the best kind of exercise is simply woven into your day.

Whether it’s a walk on the beach, a dip in the pool, or a stroll through the park, gentle movement can do wonders for your wellbeing, according to health and fitness trainer Josh Kristenson who offers the following tips:

Start at the shoreline

A walk along the beach is an easy way to get your heart rate up while enjoying the fresh sea air. Begin on the firmer sand near the water’s edge to ease pressure on your joints, and once you’re feeling stronger, try the softer sand for an extra challenge.

Cool off in the pool

Swimming is kind on the joints and great for the heart. Whether you’re doing laps, walking in the water, or just kicking gently as you float, it’s a low-impact way to stay active – and perfect on warmer days.

Enjoy your local park

Tree-lined paths and shady parks are a lovely setting for a brisk walk or a slow wander. Invite a friend along and catch up while you move. Tackle the flat bits at your pace and take your time on the hills – just getting out is what matters most.

Try gentle hiking trails

You don’t need steep climbs to enjoy a hike. Look for flatter walking tracks where you can take your time, stop for a breather, and enjoy the scenery. Even a short, easy trail can give you that satisfying feeling of accomplishment.

Take it one step at a time

Start small – 10 to 15 minutes of movement a day is a great goal to begin with. Switch things up to keep it interesting: mix a beach stroll with a swim or a walk around the garden. Add a little music if you like – pick up the pace for a song or two, then slow it down again.

Make it social

A friendly chat can make all the difference. Walk with a neighbour, join a local walking group, or even take on a step challenge with your grandkids. Moving together makes it more fun – and more likely to become a regular habit.

Ideally, staying active should be simple, enjoyable, and a part of everyday life – no pressure, just progress at your own pace.
